Random International

Random International is an artist collective known for their immersive and interactive installations that explore the relationship between humans and technology. Their work often involves responsive sculptures and environments, blurring the boundaries between the observer and the observed. Through the use of sensors and physical interfaces, Random International's creations invite viewers to engage with art in unique and participatory ways.

RANDOM INTERNATIONAL

ZOOLOGICAL

"ZOOLOGICAL" is an interactive installation with levitating spheres controlled by a custom swarm algorithm. These spheres, each 1.5m in diameter, move autonomously and collectively, mimicking bird swarm behavior. Equipped with infrared cameras, they detect their own position and that of visitors in the room. The spheres interact with dancers and viewers, responding with fluid movements. Choreographed by Wayne McGregor and featuring music by Mark Pritchard, the installation challenges the concept of free will, exploring the boundary between human and technological interaction.

In Random International's installations, viewers become an integral part of the artwork. Sensors detect the presence, movements, and gestures of the audience, causing the artwork to respond and adapt in real-time. This interaction creates a dynamic and personalized experience for each viewer, as their actions directly influence the behavior of the installation. Viewers often find themselves questioning the nature of their existence and the impact of their movements on the surrounding environment. The way they move and respond creates a sense of wonder, making people rethink how technology and humans can connect.

How it's Made:

ZOOLOGICAL is made using foil, motors, helium, cameras, and a custom swarm algorithm. The spheres, each 1.5 meters in diameter, move autonomously, displaying swarm intelligence. They use infrared cameras to detect their own position and the presence of people in the room, creating a mesmerizing and interactive experience. The collaboration between artists, choreographers, and musicians enhances the overall environment, creating a unique fusion of art, technology, and human interaction.
